SILVER SPRING, MD — To shine a light on the accomplished of college students from Silver Spring, Patch shares information provided by the students' families and Merit News.

Austin Patterson of Silver Spring was among over 700 students who earned named scholarships this fall at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio. Patterson, a graduate of Albert Einstein Senior High School majoring in theatre acting and directing, earned the Donna J. Fry '58 Scholarship - Theatre.

The University of Vermont welcomes 3,000 new Catamounts who started their studies at the school's Burlington, Vermont campus for the fall 2022 semester.

Michael Thomas of Silver Spring was named a member of the ensemble for the Albright College Theatre production of "The Big House," which ran from Sept. 29-Oct. 2. A graduate of Richard Montgomery High School, Thomas is studying communications and psychology at Albright's Reading, Pennsylvania campus. Thomas was also named president of the Skate Club, vice president of the Honors Club, and co-editor of the Albrightian newspaper.

Eyoha Henoke of Silver Spring started their journey as a Biola University Eagle this fall at the school's campus in La Mirada, California. Henoke is pursuing an undergraduate degree in computer science.

Mary Fernandes of Silver Spring earned a doctor of philosophy degree in psychology, with a concentration in joint clinical/neuropsychology from Georgia State University during the summer semester of 2022.

Nearly 750 first-year and transfer students arrived at York College of Pennsylvania for the opening of the fall 2022 semester.

Meaghan Kincaid of Silver Spring plans to study finance .Liberty Topka of Silver Spring plans to study mechanical engineering .

Tracee Matthias of Silver Spring was recently awarded a Love of Learning Award worth $500 from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Matthias is one of 200 recipients to receive the award. Matthias, graduate assistant at the University of Maryland, will use funds from the award to travel to the Association for the Study of Higher Education conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Paula Kaufmann Sotomayor of Silver Spring is among the more than 1,000 students who graduated from the University of Mississippi in August 2022. Kaufmann Sotomayor, who is a business administration major, received a master of business administration degree in the Graduate School.

Bridgewater College of Virginia, home to approximately 1,450 students, welcomed more than 500 new faces this academic year. Members of the Class of 2026 include:

Taylor Montgomery, a political science major from Silver Spring and a graduate of Albert Einstein High School.Kelly FitzGerald, a liberal studies major from Silver Spring and a graduate of Our Lady of Good Counsel High School.

Connor Crotzer of Silver Spring was one of 50 individuals who were selected for Shenandoah University's 2023 Global Citizenship Project.

Malissa Perez of Silver Spring was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Perez was initiated at National Intelligence University.

Beza Nigatu from Silver Spring serves as senator for Black Student Union at the New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury, New York.

Stephanie Portillo of Silver Spring, a member of the class of 2023 at McDaniel College, Westminster, Maryland, was named to the Omicron Delta Kappa national leadership honor society. She was named to the Trumpeters leadership honor society, which recognizes exemplary qualities of leadership, integrity, and sincerity. Portillo is a political science and student-designed French studies major.

McDaniel College student Nina Porter of Silver Spring performed in the Student Solo Recital on Friday, Nov. 11. The performance took place in Baker Memorial Chapel at McDaniel College, 2 College Hill, Westminster, Maryland.
